Project Access Mentorship
Congratulations on applying to get a mentor! We hope you'll get a lot from your mentorship experience. Below are some core principles to keep in mind when interacting with your mentor. What does a Project Access mentor do?
Simply put, a mentor is a current university student or recent graduate who can help you navigate the application process. They're also there to give you some extra encouragement during those times when you feel like it's just all so far away. They've been there too, so they know what you're going through!
What can I expect from a mentor?
Project Access mentors are asked to give about five hours of their time to each of the applicants that they help. This can be done via online calls or through email, but we usually recommend that mentors and applicants try to call each other when they can, as this is more efficient time-wise.
When you are matched, your mentor is sent a set of modules to help guide your calls. These cover topics like personal statement writing, mock interviews, and test preparation. In the first call, you and your mentor will go through which topics you are most interested in receiving help with.
Your mentor will be able to answer most the questions you have about the application process for which you cannot find the answer yourself. It's helpful to see this as an opportunity to get some of the informal advice that is otherwise hard to find online. Do remember, though, that not even the best of mentors can know everything!
How should I behave towards my mentor?
Treat your mentor as an older friend who knows what it's like to apply to university because they've recently done it themselves. Remember to always give your mentor a few days to reply to your emails. If you still don't get a reply, don't be afraid to send a second email with a friendly reminder.
What is Project Access's stance on safeguarding?
While we want you to see your mentor as a friend, there are a few things we ask you to avoid for safeguarding reasons. First, don't add your mentor on social media. Second, all written communication should happen via e-mail and the address email@example.com should be copied in. We know this seems annoying, but this is the only way we can keep operating the mentorship scheme (and really the only thing you need to do is to hit 'reply all' instead of just 'reply' when you and your mentor communicate). Third, you must read through and abide by our Code of Conduct when interacting with your mentor.
What should I avoid doing?
Do not tread your mentor as a search engine. Of course you can ask your mentor questions about the application process, but try to avoid asking too many questions that you can find the answer to online, or which require very detailed information that may change from year to year. You can easily find a lot of information on the universities' websites, and the more you know when you have your mentorship sessions, the better you will be able to make use of your mentor's time.
Do not send your mentor something that you need feedback on at the very last minute. Your mentor is likely to be engaged in many other things apart from Project Access, and you cannot expect them to drop everything at a moment's notice.
Do not expect your mentor to write your application for you. It is up to you to meet the requirements of the application, as you yourself know best your strengths and interests. Even the most enthusiastic mentor will not do this for you. They can only give you tips on what to do to make the most of your potential.
Remember is that your mentor is doing this work for free, so be sure to always respect their time. Thank your mentor for the help they have given you and inform them of how your application is going. Most importantly, if you decide not to apply, do let them know and inform the central team at firstname.lastname@example.org so that we are kept up to date. If you decide to defer your application without letting us know, you forego the opportunity to receive our help in the future.
